Dreamer

Only in my dreams would I dare dream of such a day,
a dream of such rare beauty, it near takes my breath away.
A dream that answers every wish and prayer my heart has cried,
it floods my soul with streams of love that flows both deep and wide.
You are that dream that haunts my heart in waking hours and sleep.
Your loving gives me strength of heart, yet always leaves me weak.
Should I awake before I die, my utmost dread I fear,
would be to see my dream world slowly fade and disappear.
Life would have no meaning, no purpose or design,
if I could never hold you near or press your lips to mine.
I could not bear the sorrow, I would not bear the pain,
if all the dreams I've dreamed of you, were only dreamed in vain.

The Monument

A tomb with a tome
a page in a larger work
a pile of granite, rocks, stone
a solid monument to frailty
a life gone, done, finished
a testament, a long term reminder
to a brief moment of life
a flame that flickered out and died
our pitiful attempt to make forever
what can never be forever
it lasts longer than the life it reminds us of
it lasts longer than the life that needed reminding of
it lasts and it is forgotten, left alone
that cold stone, with scribbles on it
its true meaning lost in time
along with those who searched for meaning

Forever

For ever is a simple word for time that never ends.
Eternal, without measure, as love between best friends.
For friends are sometimes lovers, two hearts becoming one,
and when love captures two such hearts, time has just begun.
All things seem as bright and fresh as early morning dew.
Things you've done a thousand times, now become brand new.
Like sweet good morning kisses, or talks till early dawn,
or making love and holding hands, the list goes on and on.
Although I know that in God's time, life will someday end,
with grateful heart I shall depart, yet mourn what might have been.
Should He grant us, by His grace, a century of love,
lying in your arms would never be enough.

If I Could

If I could keep away the slumber, stay the shadows from my eyes,
and never watch you walk away or hear your sad good-by's.
If I could see your face forever, and always hold you near,
life would then be perfect and my dread would disappear.
For my dread is in our parting, it's taste so bitter sweet,
even when I close my eyes, to rest perchance to sleep.
If I could fill each sleeping hour with dreams and fantasy,
I'd count sleep as a blessing, for you'd be there with me.
If dreams could do my bidding, and I could be their guide,
I'd wrap you in my loving arms and never leave your side.
Each moment would be precious, each second pure as gold.
We'd fill each dream with such sweet love, the half could not be told.
But dreams are only vapor, and our love is so real,
how could I hope to share with you the way I truly feel?
For that we must be wide awake, though sometimes far apart,
but is life ever free of pain, in matters of the heart?

Summer Of Our Lives

Many years have come and gone since first we danced together,
two wounded hearts in four, four time, and so began forever.
Friendship gave us time to grow, time to trust and care.
Time to find out once again that life is meant to share.
Like a seed in fertile soil, from friendship blossomed love,
not a mighty rushing wind but gentle as a dove.
In the summer of our lives, wedding vows were spoken,
pledging each that come what may our vows would not be broken.
If the Lord should grant us time to walk through fall and winter,
I will love you every day till heaven we do enter.

Pies

I’d never made a pie before
Until this summer, our first summer.
The summer of our first house, our first tries
At being grown-ups, as newly-weds.
And of our first pies.

I’ve been making every kind we can think of:
Peach, blueberry, lemon ice-box.
It must be beginner’s luck, every one turns out just right,
None burnt, none spoiled.
We eat them on the porch as the day cools off and turns to night.

He loves my pies.
His whole face smiles with the first bite.
And I love to make them, wear my apron,
And have them ready after dinner.
But the summer’s nearly over.

Soon he’ll ship out for a year, and I wonder,
Who will make him pies overseas?
Can I pack them well and air mail
All my love baked in a crust?
And can he mail his smiles back home to me?

I Had To Come And See
You One More Time
Part I

Darling, I had to come and say goodbye.
I wanted to see you
and touch your hand one more time.

Darling, I know you loved me as I loved you,
but darling, I let another take you away from me.

So darling, just let me lay my hand
on yours just one more time
before they take you away.

Maybe when we meet upstairs
you can forgive me for letting you go.

Well, darling, I must go now,
for they have come to carry you out.

Before I go, let me tell you one more time,
darling, I still love you.

I Had To Come And See
You One More Time
Part II

On my way out of town, I stopped
and bought a dozen red roses to put on her grave.

They buried her just outside of town,
up on a hill with a big oak tree close by,
where the wine blows wild,
just as she lived her life.

I placed the roses on her grave,
told her I still loved her as always.

Than as I turned and walked
back down the hill, I stopped
to look back, one more time.

Sitting by the roses
were two doves looking at me.

Then I knew she would be alright.

Buttons & Bows

Buttons and bows
Little fingers and nose
Smiles and all knows
Love grows

Cute and cuddly
Holding tenderly
Kissing your forehead gently
My beautiful baby.

Fannie & Freddie

Fannie Mae
The lady in her day.
Prestigious, poised with head held high
Upon her honesty all could rely.

She braved the land and sea
Provided for people to live free
Solid as a rock
Safer than any lock.

Years went she grew
Soon all knew
The thing to help her do
Send Freddie to her rescue.

Freddie came shining knight in armor
Secured the businessman and the farmer.
Pulling from Peter and Paul leaving Mary to fall
Now in limbo with no one else to call.

On With The Show

Center stage the scene is set,
Potential candidates debate
Smiles upon their faces with daggers in their heart
The show must go on -- each playing their part.

Best actors in the world
Memorized answers to all questions
Quick with style and grace
As the challenges they choose to face.

Reality real time play
Obama and McCain smile tainted smiles
Forgetting the war and health care
Usury law -- credit card -- cupboards are bare.

Setting a spectacular show
Spending millions of dollars as they go
Final finality in Novmeber we will see
The winner the acting candidate scores the grammy.

Concrete Dogwoods

petals white
sprayed edges with red
pearled sight
against a concrete bed

beauty stands alone
singled out
setting a tone
concrete all about

fruit of a fallen tree
blood once shed
remembrance for all to see
splotches of crimson red

truth set free
while death hung still
now a single tree
among concrete alive and real

Watch Me

Watch me
As I stumble
I fall
I crumble
I stand tall.

Watch me
As I climb high
I soar
Across the sky
I roar.

Watch me
Only one
Sometimes two
I fail to be done
Always more to do.

Grandma's Courage

She wiped her hands
in the swirls of her long skirt
that swayed as she moved about
her kitchen, singing 'Amazing Grace'
sun-kissed skin with small lines on her face.

A pounding at the door
stopped her voice
she reached up above the fireplace
brought down the old family musket
checked its powder and wiped her face.

She opened the door
with gun in hand to see
the Confederate Soldiers there.
"We came for food." They were demanding.
She said with gun held high, "My cupboards are bare."

The red-faced soldier said, "We will look."
She nudged the gun into his chest.
He moved back with a start
She said there's many of you and only one of me
you take one more step the shot is in your heart.

She knew she only had food for her family
defending that she would kill
The man stepped away
motioned for his men to move back
he tilted his hat to her and went on his way.

Tides of Time

Time comes and goes
Like the tides of the seas
Across the world
Day changes to night
Night changes to day
The seas travel on their way.

We press on through our darkest hour
Hoping for a better tomorrow
Weeping inside with sorrow
Knowing it may never be
Endless days and nights
Time takes years away from me.

Still faith and hope keep me at bay
Struggles strengthen me each day
Prayer shines through my soul
Tells me not to let go
Life is good and is mine
Even in this desperate time.
