Pies
I’d never made a pie before Until this summer, our first
summer. The summer of our first house, our first tries At being grown-ups,
as newly-weds. And of our first pies.
I’ve been making every kind we
can think of: Peach, blueberry, lemon ice-box. It must be beginner’s luck,
every one turns out just right, None burnt, none spoiled. We eat them on
the porch as the day cools off and turns to night.
He loves my
pies. His whole face smiles with the first bite. And I love to make them,
wear my apron, And have them ready after dinner. But the summer’s nearly
over.
Soon he’ll ship out for a year, and I wonder, Who will make him
pies overseas? Can I pack them well and air mail All my love baked in a
crust? And can he mail his smiles back home to me?

You One More Time Part I
Darling, I had to come and say goodbye. I wanted to see you and touch your hand one more time.
Darling, I know you loved me as I loved you, but darling, I let another take you away from me.
So darling, just let me lay my hand on yours just one more time before they take you away.
Maybe when we meet upstairs you can forgive me for letting you go.
Well, darling, I must go now, for they have come
to carry you out.
Before I go, let me tell you one more time, darling, I still love you.

II
On my way out of town, I stopped and bought a dozen red roses to put on her grave.
They buried her just outside of town, up on a hill with a big oak tree close by, where the wine blows wild,
just as she lived her life.
I placed the roses on her grave, told her I still loved her as always.
Than as I turned and walked back down the hill, I stopped to look back, one more time.
Sitting by the roses
were two doves
looking at me.
Then I knew she would be alright.

Fannie & Freddie
Fannie Mae
The lady in her day.
Prestigious, poised with head held high
Upon her honesty all could rely.
She braved the land and sea
Provided for people to live free
Solid as a rock
Safer than any lock.
Years went she grew
Soon all knew
The thing to help her do
Send Freddie to her rescue.
Freddie came shining knight in armor
Secured the businessman and the farmer.
Pulling from Peter and Paul leaving Mary to fall
Now in limbo with no one else to call.

Concrete Dogwoods
petals white sprayed edges with red
pearled sight against a concrete bed
beauty stands alone singled out setting a tone
concrete all about
fruit of a fallen tree blood once shed remembrance for all to see
splotches of crimson red
truth set free while death hung still now a single tree
among concrete alive and real

| Grandma's Courage
She wiped her hands
in the swirls of her long skirt
that swayed as she moved about
her kitchen, singing 'Amazing Grace'
sun-kissed skin with small lines on her face.
A pounding at the door
stopped her voice
she reached up above the fireplace
brought down the old family musket
checked its powder and wiped her face.
She opened the door
with gun in hand to see
the Confederate Soldiers there.
"We came for food." They were demanding.
She said with gun held high, "My cupboards are bare."
The red-faced soldier said, "We will look."
She nudged the gun into his chest.
He moved back with a start
She said there's many of you and only one of me
you take one more step the shot is in your heart.
She knew she only had food for her family
defending that she would kill
The man stepped away
motioned for his men to move back
he tilted his hat to her and went on his way.
